Frequently Asked Questions
What is the square footage of FIR residences?
All apartments are approximately 1100 - 1200 sq. ft.
I have a family but am really interested in becoming an FIR. Will being an FIR be right for me and our family?
FIR families are a critical component of the FIR program. Successful FIR experiences take place when the entire family is interested in participating in the program and enjoys frequent interaction with our undergraduates. FIRs have permission for family members (partner and dependents) to reside in the FIR apartment in accordance with the apartment's occupancy
The FIR program is not for everyone, but many previous FIR families have enjoyed the experience tremendously. Do not hesitate to contact any of the current FIRs with your questions and concerns about the program.
How many reserved FIR parking spots are available per FIR apartment?
Each FIR apartment includes up to campus parking spaces with convenient access to the unit.
Are pets allowed in FIR apartments?
Pets are permitted in the FIR apartment in accordance with Caltech's pet policy. Approval of specific pets will need to be discussed with the Head FIR and Vice President and Dean of Students for Student Affairs before moving in.
Are the FIR apartments furnished?
FIR apartments are unfurnished, but they are equipped with basic kitchen appliances, a washer, and a dryer. No other furniture is included.
Can I modify/renovate an FIR apartment to suit my needs?
Small renovations, such as paint and flooring for small areas, are possible. Larger renovations, such as adding or removing walls, kitchen renovations, and/or adding bedrooms/bathrooms are not possible. FIR apartment floor plans are as-is. However, we will work with you to make your apartment comfortable for your family.
