APPLICATION INFORMATION
Eligibility
FIRs must be employed as tenure or tenure-track members of the professorial faculty, and maintain good standing with Caltech throughout their term as FIR.
Selection criteria
Applications are evaluated according to a single criterion: Which applicants will be able to best advance the FIR program's mission (i.e., to facilitate student-faculty interaction outside the classroom and laboratory, and to provide informal mentorship relationships to help students advance their education in science and engineering).
Selection committee
Applications are reviewed by the FIR Selection Committee, which consists of the Head FIR, the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Student And Family Engagement, an Associate Undergraduate Dean, and a Student Representative.
The FIR Selection Committee makes recommendations to the Vice President for Student Affairs, who makes final decisions.
Other
The FIR program releases calls for applications for each specific open position. Calls for applications are advertised widely to all eligible faculty through the Provost Office.
The program does not have a waiting list for future positions.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Step 1. Online application
Deadline = TBD
Submit an online application by completing this application form: Apply Here
Upon successful completion of the application, you will receive a confirmation email. If you have any problems with the application form, or if you don't receive a confirmation email, please send an e-mail to fir-search@caltech.edu or Gordon Alemao at galemao@caltech.edu.
Step 2. Initial review
The FIR Selection Committee will carry out an initial review of the online applications based on the criteria described above.
Based on this review, the committee will invite a small number of applicants and their families for interviews, as well as a house visit and meetings with the residential life coordinators, resident associates and students of the building.
Note that failure to receive an initial interview invitation does not preclude a later invitation in the interview process.
Applicants will be informed by email of the status of their application.
Note that the committee will aim to complete the initial review by TBD.
Step 3. Interviews and final recommendation
Selected candidates will have interviews with the FIR Selection Committee, and will also do a house visit and meet with the students.
The FIR Selection Committee will make a final recommendation to the Vice President for Student Affairs, based on the outcome of these meetings, the feedback from the students, and other application materials.
Final appointment decisions are made by the Vice President and Dean of Students for Student Affairs.
Step 4. Final agreement
The Vice President and Dean of Students for Student Affairs will announce the appointment of the new FIR once the agreement is finalized.
Selected FIRs will be able to move into their assigned residences in summer of 2025, with the exact date to be negotiated with the Vice President and Dean of Students for Student Affairs.
